Course Description

Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of glass artistry with this beginner-friendly, four-hour workshop focused on sculpting life-inspired forms. Under the theme of glass lifeforms, we will explore flora and fauna, with project ideas including fish, seashells, plant structures, mushrooms, and more. Bring your creativity, curiosity, and ideas as you discover the beauty of shaping molten glass.

Guided by Michael Dickinson, you’ll learn the fundamental techniques of glass flameworking using both traditional tools and modern methods. Designed for complete beginners, this class is the perfect opportunity to try something new, challenge yourself, and create something truly unique.

The class format blends lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice, ensuring an engaging and immersive learning experience. As you work on your project, you’ll become familiar with essential tools and equipment in the glass studio while developing key techniques such as color application, marvering, hot sculpting, and attachment sealing.

Whether you’re inspired by the natural world or simply looking for a creative challenge, this class provides an exciting introduction to the art of glass lampworking. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to explore!

Logistics: 

Class fee includes glass and annealing in our kiln. After undergoing the process of being annealed in our kiln and meticulously cut and polished, students can expect to bring home a set of beautifully crafted shot glasses ranging from three to eight pieces, the following week.
  All of the tools will be provided for use during the duration of the class. The class format will begin with safety instructions followed by instructor demonstration of projects before students will be able to begin working at their own pace. For longer day-long classes, a 30-minute lunch break will be scheduled into the day. Please arrive 15 minutes before class to check-in.

Studio classes are offered year-round at Dickinson Glass Studio and Showroom, located in picturesque Sonoma County. We offer classes in a variety of techniques and for all skill levels in a comfortable setting with small class sizes. We are passionate about glass, serious about play, and dedicated to providing education encompassing an ancient art form.

Our studio is equipped with Glass Torch Technologies (GTT) torches utilizing propane and oxygen, two Paragon kilns, an array of thoughtfully designed hand tools, and an assortment of borosilicate glass.

Owner and craftsman, Michael Dickinson, has been a faculty member at both The Crucible and Bay Area Glass Institute, reaching over 1,000 students ranging in age from 12 to 65+. He has worked with organizations for team-builds including Google, Facebook, Twitter, Square, Salesforce, and has hosted live demonstrations for Nissan, Stanford University, Bay Area Glass Institute, and Maker Faire, Association of Clay and Glass, among other organizations.
